Samsung sells over 10mn units of Galaxy S

Samsung Electronics Co. said on Monday that it had sold 10 million units of its flagship smartphone, Galaxy S, since its global launch in June last year.

Samsung said it has shipped its Galaxy S smartphones to various countries, including 4 million units to North America, 2.5 million units to Europe.

The world's second largest maker of cellphones by shipments after Nokia sold 2 million Galaxy S devices in the domestic market.

The South Korean company expects to double sales of smartphones this year as it tries to narrow the gap with mobile handset leader Nokia and Apple.

Apple sold 14.1 million iPhones in the quarter ended in September. Its latest model, the iPhone 4, was also introduced in June.

Samsung is using Google Inc.’s Android operating system in Galaxy S, and it is the company’s most successful smartphone device till date.

Nokia most trusted brand in India

Nokia has been voted the most trusted brand in India according to a survey conducted and published by research firm Trust Research Advisory (TRA). The “Brand Trust Report, India Study 2011 was launched in Mumbai on Tuesday by Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, Former President of India. The survey covered 16,000 brands, based on 61 questions to 2310 respondents in nine major cities.

The number two and three spots were taken by Tata and Sony, respectively, while LG and Samsung were positioned at number four and five.

Describing the methodology of the survey, TRA’s CEO N Chandramouli said, “As trust is a veiy subjective term, we developed a trust matrix which included 61 components defining trust which include empathy, non-threatening ambience, perceived competence, corporate altruism, commanding respect, shared interest, displaying sincerity, enthusiasm, outward appearance and accepting responsibility.”

Other interesting results from the survey were that Pepsi came in at number 36, while Coca-Cola was at 60th place.

Sony Ericsson UK boss speaks ahead of Q2 2010 financial results of marketing push behind Arc handset, and confidence the firm’s subsequent devices will see it reclaim share

Sony Ericsson will launch its biggest ever marketing campaign in the UK in March to promote its Xperia Arc handset, claiming at the same time its new products this year will “propel it back to where it needs to be”.

The company said its new marketing will be bigger than the ‘Spark Something’ campaign, that attended the UK launch of its Satio and Aino handsets in October 2009 and formed part of Sony’s £8 million campaign to unite all divisions under the ‘make.believe’ slogan.

The Arc (pictured) is the fifth Android-based Xperia phone from the company, following the X10, X10 mini, X10 mini pro and X8 last year.

It comes with an arched body and measures 8.7mm at its thinnest point. It runs Android 2.3 and features a 4.2-inch touchscreen, 1GHz processor, 8.1-megapixel camera and HD video recording.

Sony’s Mobile BRAVIA Engine is featured, which the firm said improves the image quality, as well as Sony’s Exmor R sensor which it said improves photo and video capture in low light.

The Arc comes with on-board memory of 512MB and has support of up to 32GB. A 32GB card will come bundled with the phone as well as an HDMI cable. It will be available in black and silver from all major retailers, free on £35-£40 tariffs.

UK and Ireland managing director Nathan Vautier said: “Xperia Arc is our flagship device from three key aspects – innovation, quality and design. People look at us as a brand to bring those things to market. We’re doing that and we’ll be shouting from the rooftops when we release Arc.”

Sony Ericsson returns to profitability in 2010 with Android smart phone focus, at expense of 4,000 jobs and certain production facilities, but sales and market share slip
Sony Ericsson posted profitability for 2010, and profitability in each consecutive quarter, a consequence of its aggressive staff cut backs, reduced production costs, slimmer portfolio and focus on Google’s Android system.

Its total handset shipments reduced 23 per cent in the year, from 57.1 million in 2009 to 43.1 million in 2010. Market share dropped with it.

It said it had shipped over nine million Android-based Xperia handsets globally since launch.
Sales revenue dropped also, from 6,788 million to 6,294 million.

But its average selling price, gross margin and profitability jumped on the back of its restructuring and focus on higher-end Android smart phones.

The company has axed 4,000 jobs axed across its business alongside several production facilities.

Its Android handsets garnered an average trade price of €146 in the period, compared with €119 for its 2009 range.

Operating expenses were reduced by over €880 million, it said, at a cost €381 million.

The new Motorola Atrix smartphone is billed as the “world’s most powerful smartphone” by the company and will run the Android 2.2 platform. It follows the release of 23 Android based smartphones by the company last year in an attempt to claw back lost market share.

According to Motorola Mobility chief executive officer chief marketing officer Sanjay Jha the Atrix will allow consumers to enjoy laptop features on a mobile phone.

It is a pretty firmly focused device - if you are only interested in messaging then this phone strength well be for you, but the lack of high speed data and the ultra-basic camera means that it will probably have a limited marketplace appeal, although it does look to have some promise as a music player too.

Nokia say that the X2-01 will be available in red, deep grey, silver, lilac and azure colors. In our opinion the lighter colors look much better, buy in any case Nokia have been managed to make it a bit different to look at compared to other similar devices.

Samsung Galaxy Tab release: T-Mobile today..

Since the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Tab we’ve been bringing you news and information on the tablet device that looks set to rival the Apple iPad. We issued a comparison between the Galaxy Tab and the RIM BlackBerry PlayBook, and have also given details about some of the accessories.

Today is the day that the Samsung Galaxy Tab becomes available in the U.S. on the T-Mobile website. According to Don Reisinger over on CNet you can get the device from T-Mobile for a price of $399.99 on a two-year contract with a 5GB data plan for $39.99 or a 200MB data plan for $24.99. Altenatively if you don’t want to be tied down with a contract the price is $599.99.

Carriers Verizon will offer the Samsung Galaxy Tab from tomorrow, November 11, where it will cost $599.99 with no contract and on November 14 Sprint gets in on the act with the Galaxy Tab priced at $399.99, that’s with a two-year contract.

This 7-inch tablet device that runs Android 2.2, Froyo, also has a front-facing camera and has been released just in time for the holiday season. For more on this go to cnet.com.
