Sony Ericsson turns profit with Android focus and cost cutting

Sony Ericsson returns to profitability in 2010 with Android smart phone focus, at expense of 4,000 jobs and certain production facilities, but sales and market share slip
Sony Ericsson posted profitability for 2010, and profitability in each consecutive quarter, a consequence of its aggressive staff cut backs, reduced production costs, slimmer portfolio and focus on Google’s Android system.

Its total handset shipments reduced 23 per cent in the year, from 57.1 million in 2009 to 43.1 million in 2010. Market share dropped with it.

It said it had shipped over nine million Android-based Xperia handsets globally since launch.
Sales revenue dropped also, from 6,788 million to 6,294 million.

But its average selling price, gross margin and profitability jumped on the back of its restructuring and focus on higher-end Android smart phones.

The company has axed 4,000 jobs axed across its business alongside several production facilities.

Its Android handsets garnered an average trade price of €146 in the period, compared with €119 for its 2009 range.

Operating expenses were reduced by over €880 million, it said, at a cost €381 million.

Motorola unveils Android quartet

Newly independent Motorola handset business announced launch of a new Android based tablet and three smartphones

Motorola Mobility has announced the release of a new Android tablet and smartphone at the International CES show in Las Vegas, as well as two further Android smartphones, following on the heels of its set-up as a standalone business this week.

The Motorola Xoom tablet will be the first non-smartphone device to use Google’s latest Android 3.0 platform and will also be the first tablet to connect to Google’s Mobile innovation service which offers books, music and movies.

It features of the XOOM a 10.1 inch widescreen, five megapixel camera and the option to upgrade to 4G technology.

The new Motorola Atrix smartphone is billed as the “world’s most powerful smartphone” by the company and will run the Android 2.2 platform. It follows the release of 23 Android based smartphones by the company last year in an attempt to claw back lost market share.

According to Motorola Mobility chief executive officer chief marketing officer Sanjay Jha the Atrix will allow consumers to enjoy laptop features on a mobile phone.

The Attrix smartphone will include a 1 GHz dual core processor, 1GB of RAM, a qHD pentile display with 24-bit colour, front and rear facing cameras and up to 48GB of storage.

Google's Nexus S finds Google Maps 5.0 – A 3D Mapping Application

Samsung Range(Verizon) Android smartphone reviews

The Samsung Mobiles range is the latest member of Samsung's Galaxy S Smartphone family. It is similar to the rest of the popular Galaxy S devices that initiated in the United States in that it offers a Super AMOLED display, a 5MP camera with 720p HD video recording functionality, a 1GHz Hummingbird processor, and Android 2.1 with Touch Wiz 3.0. However, the range offers a smaller 3.4-inch display and a secondary 1.8-inch Super AMOLED "ticker" display that provides up news, alerts, and more, making the range one of the more unique devices we have seen in a while.

Despite being unique, the range has a few downfalls. Primarily, I think the Fascinate is a better phone because it is feels faster and has a larger display. However, there is nothing naturally wrong with the range, and I think there are plenty of people out there that will prefer its more compact size without too much other hardware forgo.
