Newly independent Motorola handset business announced launch of a new Android based tablet and three smartphones

Motorola Mobility has announced the release of a new Android tablet and smartphone at the International CES show in Las Vegas, as well as two further Android smartphones, following on the heels of its set-up as a standalone business this week.

The Motorola Xoom tablet will be the first non-smartphone device to use Google’s latest Android 3.0 platform and will also be the first tablet to connect to Google’s Mobile innovation service which offers books, music and movies.

It features of the XOOM a 10.1 inch widescreen, five megapixel camera and the option to upgrade to 4G technology.

The new Motorola Atrix smartphone is billed as the “world’s most powerful smartphone” by the company and will run the Android 2.2 platform. It follows the release of 23 Android based smartphones by the company last year in an attempt to claw back lost market share.

According to Motorola Mobility chief executive officer chief marketing officer Sanjay Jha the Atrix will allow consumers to enjoy laptop features on a mobile phone.

The Attrix smartphone will include a 1 GHz dual core processor, 1GB of RAM, a qHD pentile display with 24-bit colour, front and rear facing cameras and up to 48GB of storage.

Consumer devices with a wide range of applications, including Skype mobile with video, are expected to be available by mid-2011. The low-latency of the 4G LTE network makes it ideal for video calling and chatting across the room to another wireless phone or around the world to a PC or Mac.

The Verizon Wireless 4G LTE Mobile Broadband network, launched in December 2010, is the fastest, most advanced 4G network in the United States, providing speeds up to 10 times faster than Verizon Wireless' 3G network. Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE Mobile Broadband network currently reaches one-third of all Americans, with plans to expand the network to the company's entire 3G coverage area over the next three years.

Skype mobile with video represents the next phase in the strategic relationship between the two companies, which began last year when Verizon Wireless and Skype launched the initial version of Skype mobile for Verizon Wireless customers.
